Claude Vivier’s short life (1948-1983) was dedicated to a constant quest for new musical and aesthetic experiences; a quest that would lead him to construct a uniquely authentic world of sound and to write powerful, free, almost shameless music beyond any known compositional approach.
23 years after his death, Vivier’s music remains an enigma and little known to the general public.
Remaining true to its mission to familiarize audiences with contemporary masterpieces, the Ergon Ensemble seeks through this tribute to contribute to the recent international compositional and musicological interest in the composer.

Peter Maxwell Davies
Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot, opus 60
(Music-theatre work for soprano or mezzo-soprano and instrumental ensemble
Libretto by Randoph Stow)

Vesalii icones, opus 42
Music-theatre work for dancer, solo cello and instrumental ensemble

Concept:
Vesalii Icones, is one of Peter Maxwell Davies’s supreme achievements. An extraordinarily allusive, multilayered fusion of dance and music, tracing a pilgrimage around the Stations of the Cross on a series of the 16th-century anatomical drawings by Vesalius, with a dancer and a solo cellist as the protagonists.
This new production, presented by ERGON ENSEMBLE and choreographed by Konstantinos Rigos, incorporates new technological advances, by placing a camera next to the dancer, to follow his every movement. Not only the human body, but also the human soul and passion of Christ unfolds in front of the audience, while Peter Maxwell Davies’s powerful music, performed by the cellist and the ensemble, guides his steps.
Vesalii icones is paired with Miss Donnithornes’ Maggot.
A tour de force of vocal effects, it is the female equivalent of the Mad King, though Miss Donnithorne is generally more “singing”  in her madness than King George the third. In this dramatized version of the work Konstantinos Rigos places the unfortunate lady in her bedroom, where she lives in company with her delusions.

XENAKIS IN FIRST PERSON (2011)
Musical Theatre for actor, ensemble and video projections

This version of the program was presented during the Athens Festival on June 8th, 2011

Artistic direction – Concept: Alexandros Mouzas
Texts – Musicological research: Antonios Antonopoulos
Video: Vicky Betsou

CONCEPT:
Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) is globally known as the avant-garde composer and original thinker who alloyed musical composition with higher mathematics and theoretical physics. His production counts about 150 instrumental, vocal, scenic, electroacoustic and mixed technique works, in addition with a respectable number of influential theoretical articles on music, collected together in books.
Through extended interviews, pictures, videos and autobiographical data presented by a narrator with Xenakis’ own words, the performance offers a closer view to the composer’s way of thinking and a more intimate approach to his idiosyncratic personality. The narration in the first person, in particular, gives to the audience an opportunity to get acquainted with Xenakis, both as an individual and as an author.
The texts, as well as the projected material, have been selected with strict musicological criteria for maximal narration flow consistency, historical accuracy, data density, and informational diversity.
